Ranking by area is what makes this useful. A colour that covers a third of the image matters far more to the overall impression than an accent that appears in a handful of pixels, and the percentages tell you which is which.

How to use the result

The most common approach is to take the largest colour as a background or base, the second or third as a supporting tone, and something further down the list — usually a smaller, more saturated one — as an accent for buttons and links.

Reading the percentages

The percentage is the share of sampled pixels that fell into that colour group, so the figures add up across the colours shown rather than across the whole image. Similar shades are grouped, which is why a photograph of a sunset returns a handful of clear colours instead of thousands of near-identical oranges.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the percentages not total 100?

They cover only the colours displayed. Everything outside the top few groups is left out, so the visible figures sum to less than the whole image.

Can I get more or fewer colours?

Yes — the slider goes from three to twelve. Fewer gives you the broad impression; more surfaces accent colours that occupy a small area.

Why are the colours slightly different from the original?

Similar shades are grouped together and each group is reported as its average. That is deliberate — it gives you a usable palette rather than a list of thousands of nearly identical values.

For an exact single pixel value, use a colour picker instead.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using the File API and a canvas element. Your file is read from your own device, processed on your own hardware, and returned to you.
